Thank you for inviting me to join this great site. I grew up spending my winter and summer vacations on NMI each year from 1955 thru to its sale in 1976.
I will begin to scan my photos of the landscape and buildings that exisited during that time. It will always be my greatest memories and hopefully, others will post photos as well. |

| RSkill, You must have had some connection with the Angell Foundation if you were on NMI during those years. If you don't mind me asking what was that connection? Your last name isn't Skillman by any chance is it? |

Yes, my grandfather, Osborn Ensing was WR Angells doctor and with Angell and several others, bought the island to create a hunting and fishing preserve. When he died, my father William assumed a postion on the Foundation and so, my first birthday was spent in the dining room of the main lodge and we spent 20 years in the Monte Carlo. Somewhere in the old barn is my minibike which I used to ride around the island at 11, up to potholes and down to the lighthouse (which fell in to the lake in 1970 or so). Also at each crossroad (Angell Springs, Lake, etc) I buried cans with maps and island trivia, would be great to see if they still exist. I have put off returning to the island for all these years- but now would like to take my kids there camping.. I will begin to scan photos, etc, I have a lot of 16mm, Super8mm film of the island..so will check into what I have.

What a great childhood, I love to hear people talk about things like that. I fortunalty live about twenty miles from Leland. I should go to the island more than I do. I would suspect that you also know Rita Rusco. She lives in Grand Rapids and my Brothers talks with her often.

That almost sounds like an adventure novel for boys or something. That had to be pretty cool.
Based two miles from Leland- I dont get to be on the Island as much as I'd like- but at least we get to watch the sun drop behind it.
I am looking forward to building a tradition of camping on NMI with my son too.
I'll eagerly watch for more- I can't wait to see some of those photos! _________________ http://www.sleepingbear.org |

Yeah - I know where you are coming from. I've hiked with my son over the Sierras (from east to west) when he was 7 years old. (He's 27 now!) But my daughter, she is a different story. Her and I have hiked N. Manitou for the past 5 years (me alone for 2 before that). I realize we are newbies, but we have a love for the island that runs pretty deep. Her and I will be there the week of May 20th, lookin’ for morels, leeks, and such (fish), like we found last year.
I’ll let you know what we found on our return. Until then, keep us in the loop on conditions (aforementioned). |
